Square bars of stainless steel are used in buildings and other constructions, and for machine parts with flat surfaces. Squares are available in the austenitic steel grade 1.4404 which combines excellent corrosion resistance with ease of welding. Stainless square bars are stocked in both hot-rolled and cold-drawn execution. The hot-rolled product is annealed and pickled after rolling resulting in a scale-free surface denoted 1D. Cold drawing is carried out on hot-rolled, annealed and pickled starting material, and small, shallow surface defects can remain. Drawn squares have normally a tolerance on the edge length h9 as defined in ISO 286-2. This is a zero-minus tolerance which means that the edge length is slightly less than nominal.
